Small Vanilla or Paper

1–5 players: about 2–4 GB

A private survival world or lightly customized server with modest view distance can often start here.

Small community server

A good starting range for Paper or Purpur with common quality-of-life, permissions, claims, or economy plugins.

Plugin-heavy community

Large Forge or Fabric packs can need substantially more memory, especially with several active players exploring at once.

What uses memory

What makes a Minecraft server need more RAM?

Player count matters, but it is only part of the calculation. The server must also keep active world data, entities, plugins or mods, and other Java objects in memory.

  • More simultaneous players: especially when players spread out and keep different chunks loaded.
  • Higher view and simulation distances: more active chunks mean more world data to process and hold.
  • Plugins: large or poorly optimized plugins can increase memory and CPU use.
  • Mods and modpacks: additional blocks, items, dimensions, machines, mobs, and automation can raise requirements quickly.
  • Large or busy worlds: farms, entities, redstone, chunk loaders, and exploration can increase load.
  • Multiple worlds or dimensions: plugins or mods that keep extra worlds active add more work for the server.

RAM does not fix every kind of lag

Adding memory helps when the server is actually short on memory. It does not automatically fix slow chunk generation, a weak CPU, overloaded plugins, excessive entities, high simulation distance, or inefficient mods.

If the server has unused RAM but the tick rate is still struggling, the bottleneck may be somewhere else.

How much RAM for Paper, Purpur, or Spigot?

Paper-family servers can be a good fit for SMPs and plugin-based communities, but plugin count alone is not enough to size a server. Plugin quality and workload matter more than simply counting JAR files.

  • Simple SMP: start toward the lower end of the range.
  • Claims, economy, homes, permissions: allow additional headroom as the community grows.
  • Maps, logging, analytics, large databases: watch both memory and CPU use.
  • High view distance or fast exploration: expect chunk activity to become a larger factor.

How much RAM for Forge or Fabric modpacks?

Modded servers have the widest range because two packs with the same number of mods can behave very differently.

Look beyond mod count

A 100-mod optimization-focused Fabric pack may be lighter than a smaller Forge pack with complex dimensions, automation, or world generation.

Check the pack requirements

If a modpack author publishes a server memory recommendation, use that as the first reference and leave room for your expected player count.

Test under real load

A server that starts successfully is not necessarily sized correctly. Test with players online, normal exploration, machines, farms, and the content your group actually uses.

When to upgrade

Signs your Minecraft server may need more memory

  • Java runs out of memory or the server is terminated because it exceeds its memory limit.
  • Memory stays close to the limit during normal gameplay and does not recover comfortably.
  • Garbage-collection pauses become frequent while memory remains under sustained pressure.
  • A new modpack, plugin stack, world, or player increase clearly pushes memory use higher.

Before buying more RAM

Check the console and resource graphs first. If RAM still has headroom, look at CPU usage, server tick performance, chunk generation, entity counts, view distance, plugin timings, or mod behavior before assuming memory is the problem.
